Ski the Slopes of Jay Peak and Burke Mountain in Vermont

Vermont is one of the best states to be in during winter. The famous landscape of the Green Mountains and steep water-filled valleys transforms into a snow-covered paradise during the winter season, and some of our biggest summits become meccas for winter sport enthusiasts and athletes. Between a daytime lesson, an alpine plunge from a true Vermont summit, and a moonlit snowshoe walk, these mountain peaks provide the perfect recreational excursion this winter.

Can’t decide between Nordic skiing and downhill skiing. Highland Lodge is a great home base with Burke Mountain and Jay Peak within an hour’s drive.

Burke Mountain has seen more than fifty athletes make their journey to the Olympics; it’s just one more thing about this mountaintop ski resort that makes it one of the Northeast Kingdom’s best attractions. Whether you’re a snowboarding savant or alpine aficionado, Burke Mountain provides plenty to do and see. Its breathtaking views are world-renowned and only get better when you see them as you soar down the snow-covered slopes. All in all, Burke Mountain has fifty alpine trails, fourteen glades, and three terrain parks that snake their way down the mountainside, accounting for a 2,011 ft. vertical drop. With an average annual snowfall of 217 inches, Burke not only embraces the natural snowfall of Vermont, but also respects the mountain’s natural contours on its slopes. The Sherburne Base Lodge services the Lower Mountain section and includes a cafeteria, retail store, and rental shop. For day tickets to Burke Mountain, visit the website

Just four miles away from Canada, Jay Peak is a massive mountain with an even more impressive average annual snowfall of 349”, or twenty-nine feet (the most in Eastern North America). Last year, there was a whopping 491” of snowfall at Jay Peak. Needless to say, it was one of Vermont’s best ski seasons yet. Besides breathtaking views of the landscape, Jay Peak offers fifty miles of skiable terrain on its 78 trails served by nine lifts that make the most out of its record-breaking snowfall as far into spring as mid-April. And taking the road less travelled is what Jay Peak is all about; groomed trails are suggestions, so if you’re someone that would rather make his own way, Jay is for you. Tackle the three-mile Ullr’s Dream trail or head to Jay Peak’s Nordic Center for a peaceful day on Nordic skis or snowshoes.
